When you first start trading, it can feel overwhelming. There are so many moving pieces, so much information online, and honestly… so many mistakes waiting to happen. Most beginners waste a lot of time simply because they don’t know what actually matters.

If I could start my trading journey over again, these are the things I would focus on and the lessons I wish someone had told me earlier.

Find a Trusted Mentor

And I don’t mean someone who only posts screenshots of huge wins or flashy profits online.

Look for someone real.

Before investing in any course or mentorship, read reviews. Spend time watching their free content. Pay attention to their trading style and ask yourself if it actually resonates with you.

Do you enjoy the idea of scalping, day trading, or long-term investing?

Every trader is different, and the strategy that works for someone else might not work for you.

Don’t get blinded by the hype. Trading is so much deeper than the money people show online. Finding the right mentor can help you avoid bad habits early and keep you focused on the right path.

Backtest or SIM Trade Like a Maniac

I have never met a successful trader who didn’t spend months — sometimes years — backtesting.

You can start this process before you even find a mentor so you can get a feel for how the market moves. Or you can do it after learning a strategy.

Either way, this step cannot be skipped.

Backtesting is where you truly start to understand the market. It’s where patterns begin to click and where you slowly discover what your edge actually is.

When I say backtest like a maniac, I mean it.

Your eyes will start to pick up on things that no one can really teach you. The market has a rhythm to it, and the only way to learn that rhythm is through hours and hours of studying it.

This part of the journey builds your foundation.

Journal Everything

And when I say everything… I mean everything.

Write down:

  • Your trades
  • Your wins
  • Your losses
  • Your thoughts
  • Your emotions

Even the things that feel small or unimportant.

Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns in your behavior. The same mistakes will show up again and again. Those patterns are your surface-level problems, and journaling helps you dig deeper to find the root cause.

It also becomes something really powerful on hard days.

When you feel stuck or like you haven’t improved, you can look back and see how far you’ve actually come.

Don’t Tell Everyone

This might sound strange, but telling everyone you know that you’re becoming a trader can actually hurt your confidence.

People will start forming expectations. They’ll ask how much money you’re making. They might not understand the learning curve or the emotional side of trading.

All of that pressure can quietly affect your mindset.

Sometimes it’s better to move in silence while you’re building your foundation.

Protect your focus and your energy.

Enjoy the Journey

This might be the most important lesson of all.

Trading is hard. It will challenge you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

But if you truly learn to love the process, the journey becomes meaningful.

I remember it took me an entire year just to understand the concept of a trending market.

Now when I think about that, it actually makes me smile. It reminds me how far I’ve come.

These days I celebrate the small wins just as much as the big ones. And when I go through losing streaks, I remind myself that trading has already helped shape me into a stronger person.

At this point, I honestly just love the game.

Winning or losing.

Final Thoughts

Some of these lessons were hard truths that took me time to understand. Trading changes your mindset in ways you don’t expect.

At first, it might be about the money.

But eventually it becomes something deeper.

It becomes about discipline, patience, self-awareness, and becoming the version of yourself that believes you are capable of doing something incredibly difficult.

Trading is one of the hardest industries to succeed in.

But if you fall in love with the process, the growth that happens along the way is priceless.

So enjoy the game. ✨
